The Phuket Vegetarian Festival, also known as the Nine Emperor Gods Festival, is a vibrant annual event celebrated in Phuket, Thailand. Rooted in Chinese Taoist traditions, this nine-day festival is dedicated to honouring the Nine Emperor Gods and is marked by rituals aimed at spiritual and physical purification.
History and Traditions
The festival’s origins trace back to the early 19th century when a visiting Chinese opera troupe fell ill in Phuket. They adopted a strict vegetarian diet and performed rituals to the Nine Emperor Gods, leading to their recovery. This inspired locals to adopt similar practices, giving birth to the festival.
During the festival, participants adhere to a strict vegetarian diet and observe various rituals, including:
- Street Processions: Devotees, often in white attire symbolising purity, participate in processions where spirit mediums perform acts of self-mortification, such as cheek piercing, believed to bring good fortune to the community.
- Fire-Walking Ritual: Participants walk barefoot across hot coals, symbolising the overcoming of impurity and repelling evil influences.
- Bladed Ladder Climbing: Devotees ascend ladders with rungs made of knife blades, demonstrating their faith and endurance.
- Bridge-Crossing Ritual: Believers cross a specially constructed bridge to cleanse themselves of impurities and misfortunes.
The festival concludes with the Farewell Ritual, where the Nine Emperor Gods are sent off back to heaven, marked by a grand procession filled with fireworks and celebrations.

In 2025, the Phuket Vegetarian Festival is scheduled to take place from 25th September to 3rd October. The main events will be centred around various Chinese shrines in Phuket Town and other parts of the island. Visitors are encouraged to wear white clothing as a sign of respect and to immerse themselves in the rich cultural experiences the festival offers.
